The East Carolina Musical Arts Education Foundation Competition for Pre-College Organists is intended to inspire young musicians across the US to strive for the highest level of musicianship and technical accomplishment in organ performance, competing for generous cash prizes in a warm and welcoming environment. The competition will take place on the Perkins and Wells Memorial Organ at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. The competition is staged in two rounds. The first round is by a submitted recording of two contrasting pieces: one by a composer born before 1700 and one by a composer born after 1800. Applications must be received no later than February 20.
From the recorded round, three competitors will be selected to compete in person at St. Paul’s. This live round will take the form of a short recital no more than 35 minutes in length. Repertoire is entirely free choice, although competitors are strongly advised to include a piece by J. S. Bach in order to be eligible for the Bach price. Competitors should aim to present a mixed selection of repertoire, and program construction will be taken into account by the jury. Repertoire from the recorded round may be included but there is no requirement to do so; this will not affect the jury's decision. The aim is enable competitors to play at their best and, above all, to enjoy their performance in front of a supportive and enthusiastic audience. Competitors are encouraged to be in touch with ECMAEF Artistic Director David Baskeyfield for assistance with repertoire selection: [email protected].
